Diplomas could dominate in best schools, minister predicts
The best schools will teach children the government's new diplomas instead of A-levels and GCSEs in future, the education minister, Jim Knight, predicted today. Noting the diplomas had already won the backing of top universities including Manchester, Leeds and Warwick, he said colleges would also be expected to play a leading role in assuring the success of the new diplomas, as well as helping the government achieve plans to keep young people in education or training until the age of 18. The further education sector has proved itself able to engage youngsters beyond the age of 16 in a wide range of vocational education stretching beyond the traditionally academic, he said. "We want to learn from you and your excellence," he told the Association of Colleges' annual conference in Birmingham.
